about me

John M is a Linux fan in Lowell, MA.

I work at at a company writing software. I fool around with Free and Open Source software for fun & profit.

I was big into Last.fm and you can still see some of what I listen to there. I can also be found using github and recently sourcehut as well as bitbucket (historically). I don't care for most popular social media sites. If I have an account on one or the other it's probably either old and unused or was created just for tinkering.

Theora, WTF?

I'm trying to watch video clips from Linux.conf.au. The videos are theora and vorbis in an ogg container. I'm using mplayer to play them.

They seem ok, until I try to fast forward or rewind then things get all screwed up. Sometimes the display sticks with the progress bar on screen, but the audio continues to play. If I use the lavf demuxer it lets me fast forward but seems to cause the playback to become "jerky" with a stop/start skipping kind of feel to it. My desktop behaves a little better than the laptop, but what the heck is going on.... apparently I'm the only one who has these problems because I can't find an issue even somewhat similar on google.

If you read this, and know a solution let me know. For now, I'm re-encoding with mencoder and watching an it as an mpeg in avi :-(
