about me

John M is a Linux fan in Lowell, MA.

I work at at a company writing software. I fool around with Free and Open Source software for fun & profit.

I was big into Last.fm and you can still see some of what I listen to there. I can also be found using github and recently sourcehut as well as bitbucket (historically). I don't care for most popular social media sites. If I have an account on one or the other it's probably either old and unused or was created just for tinkering.

Weekly Roundup - Day Late Edition

So I was lazy yesterday, and didn't make an entry. I was taking it easy recovering from a (for me) long night after seeing Zozobra and Pelican live! There were four bands in the show at Harper's Ferry that night.

Zozobra, the band I was most interested in, started off, and was very good. They were joined by Stephen Brodsky, who came on solo after. He had my attention at first, but the music was a little too much of a "downer" to hold my attention. I would have liked a little more - pep, to use a kind of old-fashiondy word. :-)

Kayo Dot, er... lost me and I think the crowd too. During the quieter parts of their set the crowd noise was prominent. Every once in a while they started to do something focused, and then they'd go back to doodling around. Too bad, because I think they were talented, just not the kind of thing I was hoping for in a live show.

Pelican was excellent, they have a powerful sound that, even when when it is not driving, gets you ready for the next wave. I got and listened to City of Echoes a couple of times before their show. I'm glad they did not do only pieces from that album, so far I like the previous work better. Regardless, the start and end of the show, redeemed the not-so-awesome middle bands.

Then as part of my recovery regimen on Sunday I watched two Original Series episodes of Star Trek, then a little football and then the whole of Star Trek the Motion Picture. Yes, I am such a huge nerd. :-)

Finally, since this is pretty good timing to remind every one that on Tuesday, November Fourth, to stay home and avoid politics if you can. Remember, don't vote, it only encourages them. (Not sarcasm, but I'd really hope that you do whatever you want to. Personally, I'm not going to.)
